Lead is a highly toxic element that, when inhaled or ingested as lead dust and soil, paint chips, or in drinking water, is stored in human tissue, blood and bone marrow. Ingested lead can cause permanent damage to organs and the central nervous system. Children up to six years old, pregnant women and lead workers are particularly prone to injury from lead hazards.

Lead paint and associated lead-contaminated dust and soil pose the highest risk for childhood lead poisoning today. Lead paint was banned for residential and commercial use in the early 1970’s, although voluntary reduction in lead content in paint was made by industry in the late 1950’s. Lead paint was also commonly used for industrial structures like bridges, towers and plant equipment and poses lead poisoning risks to workers.
